Natural fibers link communities in the Amazon with the world

On the floodplains of the Solimoes River, the Brazilian portion of the upper Amazon River, the forest floor is sometimes transformed into a vast drying rack. Stalks of malva, a natural fiber, lie spread in neat rows under the Amazon sun, their pale tones standing out against the deep green of the surrounding forest.
