China’s commercial space industry demonstrates its innovation energy
Watching the Zhuque-3 Y2 rocket lift off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, courtesy of LandSpace’s live footage on Wednesday morning, was a moment of proud fulfillment for me. Minutes later, witnessing its first-stage booster settle vertically onto the landing zone in Minqin, Gansu province, I felt the culmination of a decade of on-the-ground reporting.
That very day, I wrote the news story on this historic mission. My visits to LandSpace’s research and development facilities and the Minqin landing site just days before the launch gave me first-hand insight into the formidable technical challenges faced by the company’s young engineers, making their achievement even more praise-worthy to me.
Over the past 10 years, I have observed China’s commercial space industry evolve from a handful of underfunded start-ups with modest ambitions into a formidable force reshaping the country’s space landscape. In the early days, I recall interviewing a veteran rocket designer from a State-owned space giant who flatly asserted that China had “no foundation for commercial space operations” and that launch services should not be entrusted to private players.
At that time, SpaceX was already demonstrating the viability of reusable rockets and lowering launch costs in the United States, yet such a path seemed unimaginable to many in China’s space community. What a difference a decade can make.
The farsighted decision by the top leadership to open the space sector to private capital and enterprises — framing them as valuable complements to State-funded entities and a source of dynamism and competitiveness — has been fully vindicated. My years of reporting have tracked how private companies have moved from tentative experiments to world-class accomplishments. Today, they are an indispensable pillar of China’s overall space capability, injecting innovation energy into the entire industry chain.
Wednesday’s milestone — China’s first successful land-based recovery of an orbital-class rocket booster — has far-reaching implications. Developed by LandSpace, the stainless-steel Zhuque-3 is specifically built for large-scale constellation deployment, offering heavy-lift capacity at reduced cost. Its proven reusability will significantly accelerate the construction of China’s low-orbit satellite networks and other commercial systems, giving the country more flexible and cost-effective options for its space programs.
Beyond the direct technical gains, the success triggers a powerful “catfish effect” throughout the industry: private-sector breakthroughs press State-owned contractors to accelerate their own innovation cycles. Healthy competition also drives local suppliers to upgrade manufacturing standards, boosting the overall competitiveness of the country’s space sector.
That said, maintaining a sober perspective is essential. Compared with the US, which leads the world in reusable rocket and commercial satellite technologies, China still faces notable gaps in many areas of commercial space operations. The journey to full reusability and routine, affordable access to space remains long and arduous.
As I watched the over-40-meter-tall Zhuque-3 first-stage booster stand upright on the landing pad in the middle of the desert — dust settling around its deployed legs — I recalled the skepticism of that designer years ago. What has unfolded since is a testament to the power of vision, policy support and entrepreneurial drive.
China’s commercial space story is far from over, and I feel privileged to continue documenting the next chapter of reusable launch and satellite networking.
