FAW advances Hongqi's tech base

By LIU MINGTAI in Changchun and ZHOU HUIYING | China Daily | Updated: 2026-08-22 09:18

Qiu Xiandong, president of State-owned carmaker FAW Group, elaborated on the technical development strategy of the Hongqi brand at a technology conference of the group, which kicked off in Changchun in Northeast China's Jilin province on Friday.

The strategy establishes value anchors through five major dimensions: safety, intelligence, energy-saving, health and beauty, defining the value pursuit of the Hongqi brand.

"In the future, safety will extend from single-point protection to an all-scenario, full-lifecycle safety system and intelligence will evolve from single-function intelligence to whole-vehicle active intelligent coordination," said Qiu. "Energy-saving will expand from single-item energy saving and emission reduction to full-chain low-carbon collaboration, while health will extend from in-car environment health to a full-journey physical and mental comfort experience."

"The five genes serve as the underlying logic of technological innovation, continuously transforming Hongqi's value pursuit into a tangible, experiential travel lifestyle for users."

The realization of the major technology platforms is the core foundation of Hongqi's value pursuit, according to Qiu.

The Tiangong platform focuses on high-level pure electric and intelligent control power, aiming to make breakthroughs in areas such as kilovolt ultra-fast charging, and artificial intelligence chassis, with medium to long-term plans for in-wheel direct drive and integrated control of drive, braking, steering, and suspension.

The Honghu platform emphasizes efficient power and intelligent energy, while reserving highly integrated emergency range extenders and carbon-neutral engines. The Jiuzhang platform focuses on scenario intelligence, evolving integration of cabin and driving control, and supporting the large-scale deployment of autonomous driving and AI cabins.

Hongqi is laying out 10 strategic tasks, empowering a complete chain from core energy to travel ecology. Among them, all-solid-state batteries and vehicle-grid interaction focus on breakthroughs in energy density and bi-directional charging and discharging technologies, expanding new scenarios for energy storage and replenishment.

All-solid-state batteries are seen as the ultimate solution for power batteries.

FAW has overcome key technologies such as low-pressure cell design and thermal buffer structure design for battery modules, built a 25 megawatt-hour all-solid-state cell pilot line, and achieved small-batch rollout of large-capacity cells, with the overall line yield steadily rising.

Over the past six years, China FAW has made breakthroughs in 1,741 key core technologies, and in the next five years, it plans to attract 10,000 talent in strategic key areas.
