BUDAPEST -- Twelve people were killed and at least 10 others seriously injured after a Polish-registered bus overturned on a motorway in eastern Hungary early Sunday, Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said.

"Twelve people were killed and at least 10 others seriously injured overnight when a Polish bus overturned and landed in a ditch on Hungary's M3 motorway," Magyar said in a Facebook post.

The crash occurred around an hour after midnight near the town of Mezokeresztes in eastern Hungary as the bus was traveling toward the northeastern city of Nyiregyhaza, police said.

The bus was carrying 57 passengers and two drivers. Firefighters rescued 35 people in two hours after the crash happened. Cranes were dispatched to move the 24-ton bus to help rescue those trapped underneath.
