Physical limits of a finite planet call for real action, not weeping

There is a grim poetry to drought. As rivers retreat, they turn into archaeological sites, revealing sunken warships, mammoth bones and the haunting “hunger stones” carved by desperate people centuries ago. One inscription, etched into a boulder in Germany, delivers a warning that resonates across time: “If you see me, weep.”

We are seeing them again. But today, the tears are as much for disrupted supply chains and stalled industries as for the generations who carved those stones.

Europe’s great waterways — the Rhine and the Danube — are shrinking to historical lows. At Kaub, the Rhine’s critical shipping bottleneck in Germany, water levels recently fell to just 25 centimeters, the lowest since records began in 1880. For cargo vessels requiring three meters of draft, the river has become effectively impassable. As a result, ships are sailing with barely 20 percent of their normal load, forcing companies to deploy multiple vessels to move what earlier took just one vessel.

The consequences extend far beyond transport. Along the Danube, Hungary’s Paks Nuclear Power Plant has come perilously close to the first shutdown in its 44-year history, as dwindling river flows deprived it of cooling water, slashing output from 2,000 megawatts to just 240. In neighboring Romania, the military resorted to blasting riverbed rock with explosives to redirect water and keep a nuclear reactor operating.

Yet while climate impacts intensify, the world’s most powerful nation continues to devote enormous resources to securing fossil fuels.

Extreme low-water events are no longer an anomaly but an emerging pattern. What is striking is that industries built around the Rhine — including BASF, Thyssenkrupp and countless manufacturers — compete for scarce rail and truck capacity whenever the river becomes unnavigable. BASF alone estimated that the 2018 drought cost it €250 million ($288.71 million) in operating profit. Since then, progress has remained modest relative to what practical demands require.

Companies can, and should, strengthen supply-chain resilience by diversifying transport routes, building strategic inventories and reducing their dependence on a single vulnerable waterway. But these measures address symptoms, not the disease.

The deeper problem is that many of the world’s great rivers are being asked to provide drinking water, irrigate farms, cool power plants, support ecosystems and transport millions of metric tons of cargo, even as a warming atmosphere steadily draws away their moisture. Climate change is exposing the limits of infrastructure built for a more stable world.

Nature’s warnings have become impossible to ignore. If the slow emergence of “hunger stones” fails to capture attention, then the thunderous collapse of polar ice into warming oceans surely should. Sadly, polar tourism remains the preserve of the rich, whose response to collapsing ancient ice is mostly selfies — not a trace of recognition that they are watching nature’s funeral march. Too often these alarms are drowned out by political short-termism and economic interests that continue to prioritize fossil fuels over long-term planetary stability.

The challenge is not simply rising temperatures. It is humanity’s enduring belief that every environmental constraint can be overcome through technology alone. We demand cooler homes, larger cities, faster artificial intelligence, bigger data centers and ever-higher standards of living, assuming innovation will always compensate for expanding consumption. Better governance and cleaner technologies can certainly help. But no engineering breakthrough can repeal the physical limits of a finite planet.

The “hunger stones” are messages from people who understood that water determines the fate of civilizations. Unlike them, however, we face a future for which the past offers only limited guidance. The climate system itself is changing.

The exposed riverbeds in Europe become archaeological sites not because they belong to history, but because they foreshadow the slow unraveling of the infrastructure on which modern life depends. If we see the “hunger stones”, we should indeed weep. But above all, we should act before the rivers have nothing left to say.
