Sinopec Chongqing SVW Chemical Co recently began operations on a new state-of-the-art polyvinyl alcohol resin production line, establishing itself as the world's largest single-site producer of high-end PVA, China Petrochemical Corp, or Sinopec, said on Monday.
The capacity upgrade is expected to bolster the security and stability of the global supply chain for this essential polymer. Notably, the first batch of products from this new facility has already been exported to Europe.
PVA is an indispensable, biodegradable raw material for strategic emerging industries, such as new energy and optoelectronic displays, as well as high-value sectors like textiles, construction and pharmaceuticals. It is used in a wide range of everyday products, serving as a moisture magnet in facial masks and eye drops, forming water-soluble film for laundry pods, and fortifying safety glass in automobiles and high-speed trains. Its high purity and transparency make it essential for optical films and polarizers in advanced electronics.
Located in Chongqing's Changshou district, SVW Chemical is the only natural gas chemical enterprise under Sinopec and stands as the largest fine chemical and new materials enterprise in China's natural gas sector. With the new line, which boasts an annual capacity of 50,000 metric tons, the company's total PVA production capacity has increased to 210,000 tons per year, ranking it fourth globally, the company said.
"This newly commissioned line incorporates an innovative polymerization process along with proprietary alcoholysis and precision purification technologies," said Yang Kun, manager of the dispatch center at SVW Chemical. "The facility's production capacity is 40 percent higher than previous equipment, achieving a high-end, intelligent and environmentally friendly production process. The mass-produced PVA meets international high-end standards."
The construction of this cutting-edge facility was completed over 17 months. During the commissioning phase, equipment was meticulously adjusted, and process parameters were optimized, ensuring a smooth start-up and successful production of high-end PVA resin products.
Historically, China has relied heavily on imports for high-end PVA grades, but SVW Chemical, with over 40 years of industry expertise, has increased the nation's autonomy in this sector. The company offers more than 100 PVA grades tailored to diverse markets, with over 70 products exported to more than 40 countries. Notably, more than 80 percent of the PVA exported to Europe's high-end market comes from this facility, and it is the only Chinese PVA manufacturer to enter the market in the United States.
Beyond its core PVA business, SVW Chemical has invested in developing new materials in the fine chemical sector. Over 14 years, the company independently developed high-barrier synthetic resins, breaking foreign technological monopolies. These products, known for their excellent oxygen barrier properties, are widely used in food packaging, automotive fuel tanks and oxygen-barrier underfloor heating pipes.
