China's first nuclear power unit using Hualong One technology, a domestically developed third-generation reactor design, was successfully connected to the grid in East China's Fujian province early Friday morning, according to China National Nuclear Corp.

The No 5 nuclear power unit in Fuqing, Fujian province, was connected to the power network and it has started generating electricity, the company said in a statement.

" (The successful grid connection) indicates that China has broken the monopoly of overseas nuclear technology and has officially become a country with advanced nuclear techniques."

The successful grid connection will boost China's competitiveness in the nuclear sector globally, improve the overall energy structure and boost the country's dual-circulation economy model, CNNC said.

According to the company, the successful grid connection will enhance the confidence in Hualong One among countries and regions participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Industry experts said the smooth operation of the Fuqing No 5 nuclear power unit will boost China's scientific and technological innovation and help develop the advanced manufacturing industry in the country.

The nuclear sector has been witnessing rapid development, which will not only improve the country's energy mix but also bolster domestic economic development, Xiao Xinjian, an industry expert with the Energy Research Institute affiliated with the National Development and Reform Commission, said earlier.

The construction of No 5 nuclear power unit started on May 7, 2015. All the key components and parts have been fully made in China and the project's localization rate of parts and components exceeds 85 percent, CNNC said.

The Hualong One reactors are jointly designed by China General Nuclear Power Group and CNNC. It is one of the most welcomed third-generation reactor designs as well as a milestone of China's innovative nuclear development.

Currently, five other Hualong One units are under construction in China. CNNC is building one at Taipingling in Guangdong and two at Zhangzhou in Fujian province. China General Nuclear is building two at its Fangchenggang site in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.

In addition, two Hualong One units are under construction in Karachi, Pakistan, while CGN proposes applying the technology at the planned Bradwell nuclear power project in the United Kingdom.
